What is Ear Candling?
Ear Candling is an ancient, holistic way of clearing excessive wax and build up from the ear canals using conical shaped candles made from linen dipped in wax. The shape of the candle creates a low pressure vacuum while the smoke from the candle dries out moisture in the ear, loosening wax and "gunk" from the ear canals (Also known as a "chimney effect"). This healing art is extremely profound,
for it is reputed to initiate a healing process that continues for
several days after the coning. This can alleviate allergies, sinus
conditions, hearing loss, earaches, tinnitus and vertigo. The
process also helps to balance cranial fluids and drain the lymphatic
system.
Evidence of ear candling dates back to 2500 B.C. Cultures that were said to have used ear candling include the Aztecs, Incas, Mayans, Native Americans and those in Siberia, Tibet, Greece, Egypt and Atlantis. Greeks and Egyptians used it as a folk remedy to improve clarity and focus. For hundred of years, doctors in Thailand, China, India, and the
Philippines have routinely included the process as part of their
regular practice of medicine. Maya and Aztec were known for using ear candling for therapeutic and ritual purposes.
What Are The Candles Made Of?
Ear candles are made from linen or muslin that is rolled into a conical shape and then dipped in to wax. There are several different waxes used to make the candles. Paraffin is the most widely used wax, however is does not burn cleanly. If you have ever had ear candling before you may have noticed a residue or "gunk" build up at the end of the session. That build up is residue from paraffin. The candles used at our clinic are dipped in a combination of beeswax and soy wax. You will not notice a residue build up at the end but you will notice that ears continue to clean themselves out for several days after the session.
What Is An Ear Candling Session Like?
An Ear Candling session begins with the client laying on their side. The therapist will drape the face and hair with a towel to avoid getting ash from the candle in the hair or eyes. Then the therapist will light the candle and slip it into a plate guard to provide a barrier against flame and wax to the body. The small end of the candle will then be carefully placed into the ear canal. You will hear some crackling; one of our clients said it sounded like rain. You may possibly feel a slight heat. Discomfort should not be felt at ANY point. If you do feel some discomfort please feel free to let the therapist know. After the candle has burned down to about 3/4 of its length it will be doused in water. Then, your outer ear will be gently swabbed with hydrogen peroxide to clean out any wax from the candle and any debris that the candle may have pulled out of the ear. Finally some ear oil will be placed on a cotton ball for you to wear in your ear for several hours after the session. The oil is made of St. John's Wort, Olive Oil, Garlic and other essential oils to keep the ear canals an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial environment. The process will then be repeated on the other side.
